Black Box Bar, that started in Miami Beach in March 2014, appears for a “two day only” (May 13 – 14, 2014) pop up cocktail party in Lovina, Bali at the “hard to find, hard to leave” Damai Hotel.
The perfect location for a Black Box Bar pop up, “hard to find, hard to leave”, as their hotel logo reads, unfortunately, due to the last minute approval for the pop up by the hotel, the only promotion was within the hotel guests who all came to join in the two day and night fun, and some early in the morning for an Arak passion fruit cocktail inspired by Carlos!

First, we have to thank the owners of the Damai Hotel, the very friendly management team as well as the staff, for allowing a two day / night “just for fun” pop up bar and allowing us to make “temporarily” call it the Black Box Bar @ the Damai Hotel pool restaurant bar. They invited Carlos, the creative director and owner of BBB behind the bar to learn some Balinese cocktail recipes and also to share with the bartenders some cocktail preparation techniques.
The local young inspiring cocktail mixologists named Davet Putra and Adi Dinwadny Putra who are 22 years of age, studied the art of mixing cocktails in the South of Bali. Davet’s first cocktail was a margarita. Carlos asked, “how was it?” Davet replied “the professor just tried it and didn’t say anything, which meant it was good!” The crowd loved the answer ! From Australia, newly wedds Samantha and Lars cheerfully ordered his infamous “speechless margarita“!
Denise B. Sun, was there in attendance for the pop up bar, she told everyone “this is great, I love it here, the bartenders are being creative, and making cocktails that are not listed on the menu by borrowing fresh fruits and ingredients from the restaurant, to make something that tastes soo good! It’s refreshing to have something different than the local Bintang Pilsner Beer! All laughs! “Whatsha you drinking there Denise?”, a hotel staff asked, “it’s delicious, a Ginger Margarita” made by Davet.
The whole concept behind the Black Box Bar, creativity and passion was accomplished, as mentioned, we sneaked into the kitchen to “borrow”, yes we will return it, guava, snake fruit (salak), star fruit (carambola), passion fruit and other fruits and ingredients, some that had never had been used behind their bar to create cocktails, causing the creativity to flow and shots being poured!
Although it was only a two day pop up bar, Bali is for sure an amazing beautiful country with all smiling faces, that will one day, definitely have a permanent Black Box Bar!
